Meet the Artist

The Artful Bird • Most of us recognize phenomena in the physical world that seem to trigger deep feelings of joy and wonder. We speak of something striking a chord and recognize that these things are a reflection of something within us—a mirror of our deepest yearnings and passions. Art offers a way to explore these strong attractions and connections. For some artists it’s a flower or a human face; for me it’s often a bird.

Drawing and Painting from Life

Meet the Artist

Light, Shadow & Local Color • I observed these larks at a coastal reserve in Massachusetts on a cold, bright winter’s day. They were foraging in deep snow along the edge of a weedy field. The light was behind them, transforming their shapes into one dominant silhouette.

Check, Please • With expertise and imagination, ANSELMO SWAN finds reasons, strategies and rewards in painting multiple works of a single motif.

Toolkit

Seeing the LIGHT • AFTER A LIFE-CHANGING SETBACK KEPT HER AWAY FROM PAINTING FOR 10 YEARS, ARTIST LANA PRIVITERA SHIFTED GENRES, AND BUSINESS MODELS, TO CREATE A BOLD NEW VISION FOR HER ART CAREER.

Meet the Artist

Amazing Glaze • Painting intricate reflections with watercolors is definitely not easy. You need to plan your layers and moves very carefully. The larger your painting, the harder it becomes to make smooth, clean transitions of color and value. In my painting, the pink cup was almost 12 inches across (not counting the handle), so to make it look real and to avoid smudges, I needed to apply multiple transparent glazes, one at a time, letting each layer dry thoroughly between applications.

PAINTING PEOPLE: MY PROCESS • ONCE I’VE FOUND SUBJECT MATTER THAT HAS INSPIRED A PAINTING CONCEPT, MY NEXT STEPS ARE ALL DESIGNED TO FURTHER THAT INITIAL CREATIVE VISION.

Meet the Artist

Incoming Tide • I began this painting of my younger brother shortly after he was diagnosed with what was, ultimately, a terminal illness. The work became not only an homage to him but also a personal catharsis for me.
